Web Design - Should You Do it Your Self or Get Help?

If you are making a website for yourself, especially if it's for a business, how it looks is one of the most important aspects of the site. Think of your main page as your storefront window and if you want to attract people, it has to look attractive without looking too busy. Here are some of the pros and cons when choosing to do it your self or get help.

Do It Yourself

When you make your own website you can be sure that the design is all your own and no one else will have exactly the same looking website as you. This is the best way to have a very unique looking website which can really become a trademark for you and your business or blog. Another great aspect is that the only limitation to the design is your imagination and abilities.

However, if something goes wrong with the website you have no one to turn to for assistance aside from yourself. Since you are the designer, you are also the server admin and web master who has to fix and update the site constantly. This is the main drawback to creating a site from scratch.

Getting Help

In case you aren't very skilled at making your own website or at coding HTML, JAVA, Flash or anything else needed for a modern website, have no fear! There are people out there who have made website templates you can use to make your website great. Not only can you still customize these with various themes, you can also choose different functions.
Depending on what type of site you want, a blog, a forum or a portal site to a forum, there are many free open source packages available:

1. Word Press Blog - probably the most popular blog website package around
2. PhP Nuke - a Portal with an included forum
3. BB Nuke - a very popular piece of forum software

You can use any of these but of them all, Word Press is probably the easiest of them to set up. Within 15 minutes you can begin to add information to your site as well as begin to customize it. If you have a problem, rest assured someone else has as well and you can find help online at the program's website.
