Life: Sun Shades
Does anyone know why it is deemed important to raise the sun shade on an airplane when coming in to land? I am always getting asked to do this and as yet have never been given a reason as to why?
Is it because if we crash we can all look out and see the ground rushing up to embrace us at 500 mph and thus feel better!

The life jackets won't do you any good at al either... but when archeologist find you in 300 years, they'll think that there was a river where you crashed. :-D

HI Mace
I guess when you fly a lot (every weekend) You just get used to it. Like you I also dont like flying but I put up with it. I always think about how many planes are in the air and how damned unlikley it would be for mine to be the one that has any kind of problem.

I have no idea why - but your explanation is very funny.

Well, then don't open the sun shades at landing. Then again, since the plane's landing, you better wake up sooner or later to get off, so I don't see why the sun shades are an issue.

I've never had them ask me that. Maybe it's the airline you fly. I don't like to fly, and I always keep it closed.

Perhaps its a European thing then? But on every airline I fly in Europe they make two announcements on approach without fail.
1. Raise your sun shade
2. Return your seat to the upright position
intrigueing huh
I shall ask on Friday when I fly to london

I think that it's so if the engine catches fire, someone will notice.
The only time that they didn't actually make me raise it was when my littlest one was still a baby and sleeping on my lap. The hostess took pity on the fact that the little one would have the sun blasting in her face.
