Internet Marketing: Analyzing A Competitor’s Website to Protect Your Own

Competitor’s websites are among your best tools for perfecting your own website. They can provide you with lots of different kinds of information and techniques to draw targeted traffic to your site. The following are the best ways to use competitor websites to your best advantage.

Your first step is to choose the right websites to consider. You want to use the major players of your industry. Begin by using a search engine and finding the leading sites in your industry. Check them out and find what approaches they have to their new and existing products.

Your next step is to look very carefully at the top five or ten sites. You can learn an awful lot at them, just by analyzing certain points. Here’s what to look for:

- check out what products and services are being offered by your competitors, and take note of anything that is different from what you have to offer on your site.

- look for gaps in their offerings that you can fill.

- examine the style and functionality of their websites.

- look into any marketing campaigns they may be using.

- try to think about the sites from the perspective of a customer – what are the strengths and weaknesses?

- try to figure out their message and their strategy.

One of the best treasures that you can find through this technique is a new niche to either redefine or add to your present products or services. This can be found by identifying the strengths, vulnerabilities, and gaps in the websites of your competition.

Even though these top websites may be run by large organizations with huge marketing budgets, don’t get discouraged. Remember, you’re not there to copy what they’ve done. You’re there to find out what they haven’t done, but should have!
