Google Adwords - Per Click Marketing
One of the most well known types of ads used is Google's Adwords. These are ads which are chosen to be displayed on a website based on the content of the website. In this way, if you want to run ads for your car parts shop the ads won't appear on sites that are about unicorns or specialty food stores.
Setting up Adwords is actually pretty simple and Google has a pretty nice website which basically walks you through the entire process step by step. Using this site, you can choose the color, size, frequency and how many sites you want it to appear on through the course of the ad. There are also other options you can choose to make the ad even more effective.
One thing you can choose from is using text only ads or graphic ads. If you choose a graphic ad, you can control the appearance of the ad completely as long as it fits into a size option for Adwords. If you choose text only ads, you can reach a larger audience as most websites will choose to run text ads to fit more options on the page.
If you are hosting a website and you are placing ads on the site, the way it works is by people clicking on an ad to leave your site. Every time someone clicks on one of those ads, you get paid a small amount of money. This is called pay-per-click advertising and is a very slow way to generate money so you don't want to rely only on that alone as a way to make money on your website.
The best thing about Adwords is that it's a set it and forget it way to make money on your site. Once you set it up you don't have to do anything to it because it will cycle through various ads all the time and not only show the same four or so ads all the time. This ensures that your visitors are always presented with new options and you have a better opportunity to make even more money.
