February 28, 2005BloggingBlogging: KeywordsI had a few emails over the weekend asking how to get keywords into your RSS feed. I guess I should have actually described that in the post huh! So here it is for you. Place keywords in the title of your feed
I also update my live bookmark in Movable Type which can be found here in my Main Index template For me it looks like this in each of these templates.
Hope that helps

When it gets to the bottom it will find the link to page two (The desert) and merrily harvest those to. Once it gets to the bottom of page two it will use the link back to page one and voila my script will have dynamically generated a whole new set of addresses for it to munch on :) Round and round it will go. Will it stop spam? No. Will it fill up the owners database with crap? Yes. Will he think twice about sending his bot to me again? Yes. If you want the script for your own domain send me an email and I will send it to you. Have a good weekend.

I thought I would start a new profit and ideas series for you, just to give you an idea or two each month on how to promote and profit from your Blog. So without further ado here is the first idea... Have a keyword optimised RSS feed. Yep simple ehh. If your Blog is about home cooking then have an RSS feed with "Home Cooking" in it. This will greatly improve your listings and traffic.

Posted by Mark at 9:33 AM | Comments (4) | Life | TrackBack February 15, 2005Privacy IssuesPrivacy Issues: Show me Your papers!February 10th, 2005 may go down in history as the final coup de grace for privacy in America. On that date, the US House of Representatives voted overwhelming for a bill that will force every US person with "any" state driver's license to have it converted into what amounts to a national identity card. Papers please! Welcome to America's police state where you will be required by law, and under severe penalty, to carry your "papers." In 2004 the United States Supreme Court ruled that failure to identify yourself to police is grounds for your arrest and probable cause for a search without any warrant! This privacy stealing bill calls for electronically readable drivers licenses to contain amongst other things: * Biometric recorded information US passports with all of the above features (plus a few hidden goodies like tracking chips,) are forthcoming within months. Worse, it has been ascertained that these cards cannot protect privacy and is subject to identity theft. As usual and under false pretense, the government Terrocrats are using the excuse of anti-terrorism, and are forging full steam ahead. Please note that hardly anyone in the US government and the US mainstream press bothers to point out, that in spite of the fact that Spain has had ID cards mandatory for many years now for all citizens and residents, terrorist bombings occur on a regular basis, even in the capital of Madrid!

I guess on current trends it will last me all of 7 mins eh! Sorry Andy but you just don't get 15 anymore im afraid :( But why oh why Eddie Stobart? Who is Eddie Stobart anyway? For my non UK readers he owns a trucking company called aptly enough Eddie Stobart! His green liveried trucks can be seen crawling there way around the UK's congested road system night and day. last night was my turn to see one. I had been home to the UK for the weekend and was making my way down the M11 to Stansted to catch my "Fly Niki" back to Vienna. A 9pm flight and I had left in plenty of time to make it (So I thought) 14 miles from Stansted the traffic grinds to a halt. Accident I thought! Sure enough 20 mins later and with me and her indoors watching my time margin slip sliding away an ambulance races past on the hard shoulder, 10 mins later another one speeds past. A whole 45 mins after we stopped PC plod arrives and decides he can sweep the road clean and get the traffic moving again :) I guess he had been in hot pursuit of a nasty speeding motorist but that's another story ehh :) So there we are two lanes of impatient traffic (me frantic) One lane moving :) In this situation you do NOT let anyone in! It's human nature, just imagine you have'nt seen them and drive on past thankfull that this time you picked the correct lane. So there sits Mr Stobart in his huge green truck. Now he could have barged his way in but No much more subtle is our trucker. He opens his window leans out and looks directly at the driver of the car he wants to let him in. The driver promtply does so. The next truck in the queue does the same and he also gets let in. This amazed me but it also led my thoughts to marketing (I am odd I know) What's the connection? Well I have touched on this before but it's the barriers you see. Whilst we are inside out little car with all the wndows up we are suitably shielded from humanity, wind your window down and all of a sudden humanity is not so easy to ignore as in the turckers case! The moral is remove as many barriers as you can on your website and you will sell more of what you're trying to sell! Oh yes and when you want to get let out of a junction just wind your window down :) Mark...

I get the bloody Peakcock award and a donkey jacket wearing sheet metal fabricator from Lancashire gets Best Small Business! No justice in this world :) Still Paul does remind me of an old Blacksmith friend of mine called Dave Knight. A more eccentric chap you could'nt wish to meet, perpetual half smoked unlit roll up in the corner of his mouth and a keen member of the sealed knot for whom he makes swords amongst other things :) I remember one day down at Daves Forge whilst we were warming ourselves he suddenly blurted out "Wheres me Fu++++** hammer"? Ah Agamutu has had it again he raged. "Agamutu" I said! 'Yeh he's the god of borrowing things! Only thing is he forgets to bring the bloody things back, and then when he does he puts them in a different place to where you left it'! Now over the years I have tinkered with cars and bikes and now karts and I have to admit that the times I have put a spanner down only for it to DISSAPEAR is beyond counting. Then voila just when you reach boiling point and have completed stripping the whole car, there it is right on top of the air filter all the time. Now you know and I know that you did indeed not only look on the air filter but also stripped that down too. Daves answer is Agamutu :) He borrowed it, lent it to someone else and then while your wernt looking brought it back!

Posted by Mark at 8:34 AM | Comments (2) | Blogging | TrackBack Internet MarketingInternet Marketing: My Brain Hurts! The human brain is a much under utilised tool...Yes, even yours :) All of us are using just a tiny percentage of our brain power. All of us have the capacity to take in and use many times the amount of information we do at the moment. Most of us dont! And hence most of us are not that successfull! Do you think that I or indeed any successful entrepreneur ever stops seeking out new opportunities? Do we ever stop seeking for new ways to save or make money? Do you imagine that I would ever believe that I had already found all the ideas I would ever need? Of course not! All successful people are on an ongoing (never ending) quest for improvement and advancement. What works today may not work at all tomorrow. The way you did things yesterday might not be the best way to do them today. Even the most successful people can do things better. If you're not advancing and developing, you're going backwards. There is no such thing as standing still. No matter what you are doing now or even what your reason is for reading this Blog :) If you want to better your lot you have to use your Brain more and implement what you learn. I know lots of people who dream the best millionaire status you can imagine! They dont actually do anything to bring it to reality mind you! Just dream and hope.

They remind me of an old school teacher of mine Mr Norton! Man he used to strike the fear of God into you when he shouted from across the playground. But he was talking directly to YOU at the time, and boy did he get your attention! That's the point of this post. Who do YOU talk to when you post on your Blog or write on your website? Are you talking to the masses! Or are you talking to the individual. If you want to be succesful with your Blog or internet business you better make damn sure that it's the individual who is reading your copy! You need to bond with your readers and the only way to do that is to talk to YOU! Yes YOU laddy :)

I dont know whether to be flattered or annoyed to be honest. As we are sponsors I did'nt think we were allowed to be nominated. I thought if we did we might get a shot at WEB DESIGN perhaps! Nope the bloody Peacock award it is :( So in case you don't know what self imprtance is... self-im·por·tance (slfm-pôrtns) Excessively high regard for one's own importance or station; conceit. If you think that fits me and this Blog please feel free to vote. At the moment we have NO votes thankfully :) Still perhaps it would be nice to beat Mark Cuban ha ha ha

Posted by Mark at 9:24 AM | Comments (1) | Web Design | TrackBack Internet MarketingInternet Marketing: I hope you upset someone today!American Express isnt for everyone! Oh how that campaign must have pissed people off! Well the people that are skint that is! The whole thrust of the letter was that it made the recipient FEEL special if they had money. It evoked an emotional response from them and better still made them want to prove to American Express that, yes indeed you are correct I am special, I have money and thus to prove it you I will have one of your cards, ta very much :) If you want to sell you have elicit a strong EMOTION in your prospect! People don't almost buy anything. They (You) are very emotionally attached to their (your) cash! Your offer therefore has to trigger a stronger emotion than their cash is so that they part with their hard earnt for it! American Express did'nt give a flying FCUK if they upset people that could not afford one of their cards, because they were not interested in having those people as their customers anyway! Just as FCUK don't care if they upset all the dads and moms in the land. They are targeting a teenage market and for a teenager it's all the better if mom hates it :)
Posted by Mark at 3:09 AM | Comments (0) | Internet Marketing | TrackBack February 2, 2005Internet MarketingInternet Marketing: Go F*** YourselfAs we say in marketing circles. It's all in the title :) And I can imagine that this title piqued your interest a tad today! I have in my life sold most things to most types of people :) What I have observed is this. If you approach 500 people with your product or service, you will sell to more of them face to face than you ever will over the phone! You will sell more over the phone than you ever will by direct mail, and more by direct mail than you ever will over the internet. So what do we conclude? It's quite simple really. As the barriers between your customer and YOU increase, so does the resistance. And sadly so does the abuse! The person who listens to you and then tells you politely in a face to face situation that they're "not really interested thank you very much", will be the same person who says "I'm too busy to talk to you!" before slamming down the phone, and the same person who scrawls "Bollox" across your direct mailing piece before returning it in the envelope you're paying for!, and exactly the same person who emails you back to say "Go F*** yourself you ass***!" So when looking at your Blog, Website or even your direct mailing piece that Bob Bly would be proud of :) Try to think about the way you communicate with your customers and potential customers, and the effect the barriers that are there have on them.
